The Goethe Bicentennial and Music Festival held in 1949 was the kick-off to Aspen's long history as an intellectual and cultural center. Among the people most credited for the event are Walter Paepcke and his wife Elizabeth. Missing from virtually all accounts is Beatrice Teller Spachner. Beatrice Spachner was a Vice-President and Chairman of the Music Committee and a member of the board of directors of the Goethe Bicentennial Convocation and Music Festival. On May 18 at 5:30 Explore presents John Seelen, Ms. Spachner's grandson, at Explore to talk about his grandmother's unheralded role in the founding of modern Aspen.
